The Unexplained Archive

Every strange thing,
examined honestly.

Ghosts, poltergeists, cryptids, UAP and near-death experiences โ€” each one presented with the claims, the cultural context, the evidence grade, and the scientific counter-argument side by side. No hype, no dismissal.

Analyse Your Experience

Describe what happened โ€” the time of day, the room, what you saw, heard or felt, and what you were doing beforehand. You'll get the mundane explanations, the spiritual readings, and what to check next.

Landmark Cases

The cases that shaped the field โ€” including the ones that turned out to be false. Knowing how famous claims collapsed is as useful as knowing which ones still stand.

1848

The Fox Sisters

Hydesville, New York

Confessed hoax

Rapping communications that launched the global Spiritualist movement โ€” later confessed as toe-cracking, then partly recanted.

1917

The Cottingley Fairies

Yorkshire, England

Confessed hoax

Two girls photographed fairies and convinced Arthur Conan Doyle. The cut-out illustrations were admitted 66 years later.

1967

The Pattersonโ€“Gimlin Film

Bluff Creek, California

Disputed

59 seconds of a striding figure that has resisted definitive debunking and definitive proof for over half a century.

1974

The Enfield Poltergeist

Brimsdown, England

Contested

Eighteen months of levitation, furniture movement and a gravel voice โ€” with investigators split between fraud and phenomenon.

1977

The Wow! Signal

Ohio, USA

Unexplained

A 72-second narrowband radio burst from Sagittarius, never detected again despite decades of searching.

2004

The Nimitz Encounter

Pacific Ocean

Officially unexplained

Navy pilots tracked a "Tic Tac" object performing manoeuvres with no visible propulsion. The footage was later officially released.

Investigator's Toolkit

What each instrument actually measures โ€” and the honest limitation that television never mentions.

๐Ÿ“ถ

EMF Meter

Detects electromagnetic field fluctuations.

Reality check

Also reads wiring, phones and appliances โ€” baseline the room first or every reading is meaningless.

๐Ÿ“ท

Full-Spectrum Camera

Captures infrared and ultraviolet beyond human vision.

Reality check

Vastly increases dust and insect false positives, which is why "orbs" dominate the footage.

๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

Digital Recorder

Captures potential EVP for later review.

Reality check

Use an external mic and log every real-world noise, or you will "discover" your own stomach rumbling.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Thermal Camera

Maps surface temperature differences.

Reality check

Shows heat left on surfaces by people โ€” excellent for debunking, poor for proving.

ใ€ฐ๏ธ

Infrasound Meter

Measures sound below 20 Hz.

Reality check

The single most underused tool โ€” infrasound explains dread, nausea and peripheral figures.

๐Ÿ”บ

Control Objects

Traced objects placed to detect movement.

Reality check

The most scientifically sound technique on this list, and the least used on television.

How We Grade Evidence

Every topic above carries a grade. Here is exactly what those letters mean, so you can weigh each claim yourself rather than take anyone's word for it.

A

Compelling

Multiple independent instruments, controlled conditions, and no plausible mundane explanation.

B

Notable

Credible multi-witness or instrument data, but environmental factors are not fully excluded.

C

Suggestive

Consistent reports with weak physical corroboration; psychological factors remain likely.

D

Weak

Anecdotal, unrepeatable, or heavily dependent on the observer's interpretation.

F

Explained

Reliably reproduced by known mundane causes under test conditions.

Still unsettled by something?

If you're living with something you can't explain and want to talk it through with someone experienced rather than read about it, our intuitive readers work with people in exactly this position every week.
